Mrs. Colonna's 2009-2010 Third Grade Class
Where we are all learners!

Welcome to Mrs. Colonna's class website!
April was a month of hard work in our classroom as we prepared for the NJASK. The class will be taking the test in the second week of May. Many of the assignments completed as test preparation were used as grades for the 4th marking period. You may see a drop in some scores because of the challenging material covered. May will hopefully bring us warmer days as it was still pretty cool in April. We will be working on our class project of creating an animal fact book this month. This is a project I have done every year and our class will be able to look back at the work of previous students.
In mathematics, we will review multiplication of multi-digit numbers and learn division with remainders in chapter 10. The class will learn the slogan, "Don't Munch Stale Bread: to remember the steps of long division (Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring Down). Again, mastery of multiplication facts is necessary for this chapter.
In language arts we are on the themed unit, "Cultures: What happens when two ways of life come together?" The reading skills that will be focused on are cause and effect, using context clues, author's purpose, drawing conclusions, fact and opinion, making generalizations, compare and contrast, and making inferences. We will also learn about adjectives, articles, adverbs, and conjunctions.
Each week, we read a new story, focus on a new grammar concept, and learn a new spelling list. All language arts tests are given on Friday, unless otherwise noted. Thursday night homework is to study spelling words, re-read the story of the week, and complete a grammar review page. During the month of April, we will not complete a new story each week because of ASK review.
In Social Studies we will be working with the world map and locate and identify the continents and oceans. In Handwriting, the students will continue to learn the keys of legibility for uppercase letters, such as shape, size, spacing, and slant and will begin uppercase letter. Please encourage your child to practice shaping letters appropriately without picking up his/her pencil.

Students are responsible for turning work in on time, putting their names on their papers, and carefully completing work. Students will lose 10 points for not putting their names on their papers and turning in work late. Every night, please sign your child’s homework book and it will be stamped in the morning. Any notes or questions you have for me can be written in the assignment book or through e-mail. Thank you to all the parents for having good communication skills! Even your quick notes help in the learning process at school.
I hope we soar through third grade as if on the wings of our monarchs!
