Main Road Third Graders Soaring to Space

Learning about NASA’s goal to make reusable rockets, Mrs. Franks third grade science class decided to try to help them out. They learned about Newton’s third law, (for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction), and the principles of how a rocket works. The rocket’s action is to push down on the ground and the reaction is that the ground pushes the rocket up with an equal force. They studied propulsion, and aerodynamics and designed their rockets out of plastic water/soda bottles. Wednesday March 9th, was a sunny day with temperatures in the 70ºs, and little wind. It was the perfect conditions to test their rockets. Using a pump to create air pressure as their propulsion, the rockets were sent flying high above the trees. The students enjoyed seeing their hard work put into action.
